Recently, the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) announced its 2026 class of Fellows, recognizing 59 scientists worldwide for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the field. Chengbo Liu, a researcher at the Institute of Biomedical and Health Engineering, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the State Key Laboratory of Biomedical Imaging Science and System, was elected an SPIE Fellow.This prestigious recognition reflects the international scientific community’s acknowledgment of Liu’s significant contributions to biomedical optics and photoacoustic imaging.


Chengbo Liu received his Ph.D. in Biophysics from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2012. His research focuses on the development of photoacoustic imaging technologies and instrumentation, as well as their clinical applications and industrial translation. He serves as an Editorial Board Member of Photoacoustics, a leading journal in the field of photoacoustic imaging, and as an Associate Editor of Biophotonics Discovery. He also serves as Assistant Director of the State Key Laboratory of Biomedical Imaging Science and System and Director of the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging. Liu has led more than 20 research projects, including a Key Program and an Excellent Young Scientists Fund project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as projects under the National Key Research and Development Program of China. He has published more than 130 SCI-indexed papers and holds more than 20 granted invention patents.

Through its high-level international conferences and scholarly publications, SPIE continues to advance the frontiers of optics, photonics, and their applications. SPIE Fellowship is one of the highest honors in the field of optics and photonics, recognizing individuals who have made significant scientific and technical contributions and demonstrated leadership with substantial impact on the field and the broader scientific community. The selection process is highly rigorous, with only a limited number of individuals elected worldwide each year. Since 1955, fewer than 2,000 individuals have been named SPIE Fellows. Liu’s election as an SPIE Fellow not only recognizes his long-standing contributions to photoacoustic imaging and molecular imaging, but also highlights the growing international impact of the laboratory in biomedical optics and biomedical imaging.
